As architecturestudent you try to find good architecture at every place you go. Even if it’s a island, known for hiking and beach tourism such as Tenerife, you can be sure there is something architectural to discover there. Especially Tenerife offers many interesting projects which creating beautiful symbiotics in between nature and environment, materials and sculptural forms and are playing with the unique changes of light and shadows of this island.
When you’re thinking about architecture of the canary island theist famous project is the auditorium of the Spanish architect Calatrava. But if you are walking around the city, more projects will catch your eye, such as a few town houses, office or school buildings built by local Spanish architects. Of course you should visit the espacio de las Artes, built by herzog & de meuron. It’s a nice example of a well working, multi functional building which opens new public spaces for Santa Cruz. It combines a library, café, museum and offers new walking connections within the city.
Also worth to take a look at is the Iberostar Hotel. The main building was built within colonial style but was renewed in 2011. The building what will be most surprising would probably be the colegio oficial de arquitectos. The institution is placed in a brutalistic office building, made out of prefabricate concrete forms and stands for hisself trough form, proportion and material.
